For her portrayal of Marge Gunderson in Fargo (1996), McDormand won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She had some strong competition at the 69th Academy Awards in 1997. Other nominees included Diane Keaton, Brenda Blethyn, Kristin Scott Thomas and Emily Watson. In McDormand’s acceptance speech that year she hammered home the fact that casting decisions were actually based on merit and talent. “We five women were fortunate to have the choice, not just the opportunity but the choice, to play such rich, complex female characters. And I congratulate producers like Working Title and Polygram for allowing directors to make autonomous casting decisions based on qualifications and not just market value,” she said. “And I encourage writers and directors to keep these really interesting female roles coming, and while you’re at it you can throw in a few for the men as well.”

McDormand earned her second statuette for her role as Mildred Hayes, a bereaved mother seeking justice for her murdered daughter in the filmThree Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri(2017). Other nominees included Meryl Streep, Margo Robbie, Saoirse Ronan and Sally Hawkins. She shocked the audience with her powerful speech and talk of inclusion. She opened by saying, “If I fall over, pick me up because I’ve got some things to say,” and then went on to urge all of the female nominees in the room to stand up. She then urged producers to back their projects, and wrapped up her speech with: “I have two words to leave with you tonight, ladies and gentlemen: inclusion rider.” She was calling on stars to add it to their contracts so there are requirements for gender or racial diversity in the films on which they work.
