His agent confirmed his death to Deadline. The Scottish actor reportedly died in the hospital near his home in Lambert, Scotland. He was ill for the past two years, the outlet noted. Coltrane was best known for portraying the larger-than-life Hogwarts gamekeeper and ally to Harry Potter, Rubeus Hagrid, in all eight films in the magical franchise. He appeared in HBO Max’s “Return to Hogwarts” 20th anniversary special in 2021 to reminisce about the legacy of the films and his beloved character. “So you could be watching it in 50 years’ time, easy. I’ll not be here, sadly, but… Hagrid will, yes,” he tearfully said at the time. His final TV appearance was in 2020 on Urban Myths where he portrayed Orson Welles. He also famously starred as Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in two James Bond films, GoldenEye and The World is not Enough, along with bringing to life numerous memorable characters in films like Nuns On The Run, Mona Lisa and Ocean’s 12. His work as forensic psychologist Dr Edward ‘Fitz’ Coltrane in the TV murder drama Cracker also earned him three consecutive BAFTA best actor awards. He scored additional nominations for his work on National Treasure and Tutti Frutti. Coltrane was dubbed one of Britain’s funniest comedians, appearing in The Comic Strip series and the movies in the ‘80s. The actor, born Anthony Robert McMillan in 1950, took the name Coltrane in early adulthood as a tribute to Jazz saxophonists. His first breakout role was in a theater production of The Slab Boys before making his TV debut in BBC’s mini-series The Lost Tribe. He is survived by his sister, Annie Rae, his children Spencer and Alice, and their mother and his ex-wife Rhona Gemmell. More News:
